Anzac Day Trading Rule Changes

Important announcement for local businesses - Anzac Day trading rule changes.

As ANZAC Day approaches, we want to ensure that all Gunnedah businesses are aware of important changes to ANZAC Day trading rules coming into effect this year.

Under the Retail Trading Amendment (ANZAC Day Trading Hours) Act 2024non-exempt retail shops can no longer trade after 1:00 PM on ANZAC Day – Thursday, 25th April 2025. Some businesses that previously traded all day may now need to close for the entire day unless they have a valid exemption.

👀 Who does this affect?

This change mainly applies to larger retail businesses. However, the following businesses may continue to operate as usual:

✅ Small shops (up to four employees and no more than two owners)

✅ Florists

✅ Cafes, restaurants & takeaway food outlets

✅ Newsagencies

✅ Petrol stations

✅ Pharmacies

✅ Vehicle service centres

✅ Shops trading at sporting or charitable events

💡 Not sure if your business qualifies for exemption?

You can apply for one through NSW Fair Trading. It’s important to act early if you believe your business has exceptional circumstances.

👥 Employers – please note:

Even if you're exempt and open, ensure your team is paid public holiday penalty rates in line with your applicable award. This is a compliance requirement and essential for protecting your business and staff.

📝 What should you do next?

  1. Confirm your exemption status via NSW Fair Trading

  2. Update your trading hours and let staff and customers know early

  3. Review your rosters and ensure correct penalty rates apply

  4. Apply for any required exemptions as soon as possible

  5. Seek help if unsure – workplace advice is available
